Lesson 7 - Contentment & Self Control

Lesson 7 - Contentment & Self Control

Man’s Desires - Matthew 5:27 – 30

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’  But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.  And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

In this passage, Jesus addresses the commandment against adultery and expands its meaning to include the intention and thoughts of the heart. He teaches that not only the physical act of adultery but also lusting after someone in one's heart constitutes a violation of this commandment.

Jesus emphasizes the seriousness of lustful thoughts and their impact on a person's heart and relationships. He uses strong imagery to emphasize the importance of avoiding temptation and taking radical measures to prevent falling into sin. Jesus mentions the extreme actions of gouging out an eye or cutting off a hand to illustrate the gravity of the situation.

The intent behind Jesus' words is not to promote literal self-mutilation but to emphasize the need for radical measures in combating sin and avoiding temptation. He urges his followers to take decisive action to remove anything that may lead them to stumble morally or spiritually.

This passage challenges believers to examine their hearts and thought lives, recognizing the importance of purity, self-control, and holiness. It highlights the significance of addressing not only outward actions but also the inward attitudes and desires of the heart.
