Lesson 2 – Change Your Attitudes

Matthew 5:1-2

Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.

Change Your Attitudes = Blessings

Jesus said

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted

5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy

8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God

9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.What is Mercy? What is Merciful? 

 Definition of Mercy compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one’s power to punish or harm.

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you?  To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

 James 2:13 (New Testament) 

…Because judgement without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. 

Mercy triumphs over judgement  

Examples of Mercy in action 

• feeding the hungry

• visiting the imprisoned

• burying the dead

• clothing the naked

• caring for the sick

• giving shelter to travelers (Hospitality)

• offering drink to thethirsty
