Lesson 16 - Treasures in Heaven

Lesson 16 – Treasures in Heaven

Matthew 6:19-21

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also

In these verses, Jesus teaches about the proper perspective and priorities regarding material possessions and wealth. He warns against placing excessive value and trust in earthly treasures, which are temporary and vulnerable to decay and theft.

Jesus encourages his followers to focus on storing up treasures in heaven. Unlike earthly possessions, heavenly treasures are eternal and immune to destruction or loss. By prioritizing heavenly treasures, believers align their hearts and desires with eternal values rather than temporary wealth.

The passage emphasizes the connection between one's heart and their treasure. Wherever a person's treasure is, there their heart will be also. Jesus implies that the objects and pursuits we value the most reveal the true affections and priorities of our hearts. By directing our attention and investments toward heavenly treasures, we cultivate a heart that is aligned with God's kingdom and eternal purposes.

This passage does not condemn wealth or possessions in themselves but warns against the danger of becoming attached and overly focused on earthly treasures. It encourages believers to adopt a perspective that values eternal treasures and invests in spiritual growth, acts of righteousness, and the well-being of others.

However, the underlying message calls for a balanced and proper understanding of wealth and possessions, recognizing their temporary nature and the need to prioritize eternal treasures and God's kingdom. It invites believers to examine their hearts, align their values with God's, and make choices that reflect an eternal perspective in stewarding their resources.
